the cake:
this cake is a result of diasporic love and the openness of sharing cultures—
two subtly sweet layers of wintermelon cake, sprinkled with bursts of candied wintermelon, and one central layer of a sharp gingery nian gao that cuts through a surrounding bold black sesame filling, all covered in a light, whipped white rabbit cream.
the experience:
we’re all at hot pot on tuesday the 17th, in the year of the fire horse. everyone is calling out their favorite add-ins and regaling each other with all that we’ve lived to bring us here sitting at the table in this moment.
some of us are talking about the foods we grew up eating, and you learn about sweet potato noodles and how to cook aorta.
some of us are talking about traditions, and you learn that you shouldn’t wash your hair or the dishes or cut anything today.
some of us are reliving memories, and you learn about eating haw flakes after taking herbal medicine to help with the taste.
it’s all of us laughing at stories and jokes, ducking under arms passing trays of add-ins across the table, tolerating zero personal space so we can all fit on one bench, sharing our pasts for who we are and our dreams for what this year is going to be.
